February 01 SurgeryHad surgery on my shoulder on Monday. According to my doctor it was supposed to be a cake walk. Not so much. I had a pump full of medicine plugged into my arm until Mike pulled it out tonight. I took off all the bandages as well. So, now all that I have left are three small stiches and a sling around my left arm. Typing with one hand is challenging. The other funny thing I noticed was that I couldn't remember my password unless I used both hands to type. Very strange.Any way, I'm recovering and will hopefully be back to normal soon. No soccer for a little while though. :( January 22 A very yuppie dayYou know you're a yuppie when your very busy Saturday looks like the following...
10 AM - Pilaties with your husband
Noon - MRI on bad shoulder
2 PM - Take dog to physical therapy (rehab on bad back)
4 PM - Massage
9 PM - Indoor soccer (over 30 league)
January 15 The return of indoor soccerMike and I played soccer Friday night (in the rain) for our old outdoor team and indoor soccer Saturday night. We moved from Monday night to Saturday because we kept getting killed by the more experienced and younger players. We lost a few players in the move (SeanPur = too cool for school) so we had to do some recruiting. Thankfully CarmenZ and Nilaldri joined up. Carmen was amazing. Her baby Tyler is only 9 weeks old and yet she was running around the field like crazy. She scored the team's highest number of points (3) and was a wall on defense. We won the game 8-1. I scored 2 goals thanks to Carmen's brilliant passing. I even had a couple of assists. I love Saturdays! :) January 08 Australia TripWhat can I say about my trip to Australia? It was amazing! My hosts Julian, Dave, and Daniel were incredibly generous with their time and my travel mate Dietmar was a great sport and a lot of fun. We worked hard (really, I swear) and packed as much sight-seeing in as possible. I arrived on the 30th of December and left January 7th. It is hard to believe how much I saw while there. Here is a summary: Dec 30th: plane ride to Australia, Heath Ledger sits one row in front of me, arrive in Sydney, take a nap, go shopping Dec 31: tour around Darling Harbor, visit the Chinese Garden, first look at Bondi beach, fantastic BBQ on Julian's deck overlooking the beach, fireworks, and a little Texas Holdem poker, we really did talk about work (I promise) Jan 1 (the hottest day on record in Australia): ferry ride to Manly, lunch overlooking Manly, quick dip in the water, 15 min walk from Manly beach to Shelly beach, ferry ride back to Sydney, recover from heatstroke in hotel Jan 2: head out West to the Blue Mountains, survive Dietmar's driving, stop at Featherdale Wildlife Park, pet some koalas, feed a kangaroo, make our way out make our way out to see the Three Sisters rock formation, hike down and then back up the 841 step Giant Staircase, sweat a lot Jan 3: meet 3H group at their offices in Bondi Junction, dinner at Mu Shu (very yummy) and drinks at Icebergs overlooking Bondi beach, drank a couple Scarpinas my new very favorite drink (it's like a lemon sorbet that will kick your ass) Jan 4: Dietmar and the boys go play golf, I walked around the Botanical Gardens taking lots of pictures of the enormous bats for Dietmar, 3 and a half hour climb to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Jan 5: more meetings with 3H, checkout the incredible view from Daniel's penthouse apartment in Bondi Junction, a couple more Scarpinas, trip to Star City Casino for a little blackjack, taught the boys to play craps, win a respectable amount of Australian dollars Jan 6: Julian and Dave promise to teach me to surf, we visit Whale Beach and Palm Beach (both beautiful), I pick out my new house overlooking Whale Beach, beaches are closed to swimming and surfing because the wind it too choppy, head back to the city to catch the afternoon session of cricket, Dave explains the basic rules of cricket, Julian taunts the opposing team, Australian captain, Ricky Ponting scores over 100 points to lead Australia to victory Jan 7: plane ride back home December 26 Great Christmas this year!Mike and I spent Christmas in Seattle this year. We had a great time. We went to Ho Ho's Chinese restaurant again this year for Christmas Eve. It has become our tradition. The food is so great; I don't know why we only go there once a year.
I loved buying a bunch of presents for Mike and my family. We totally over buy for each other. Probably because we don't have any kids and get a kick out of surprising each other. I got a bunch of CDs and DVDs for Christmas. Mike also gave me a speed bag to go along with my heavy bag down in the basement. I can't wait to get it set up so I can try it out. I am pretty terrible on the speed bag so I could use the practice. Mike also found me a great FSU sweatshirt so I could officially retire the one I bought when I was still in college. Mike got a video iPod and I have to admit the color interface really makes a difference. I haven't watched any videos on it yet though. Our dog Sigmund loved opening his presents. I wrapped up a few regular sized and one extra large tennis ball for him along with some cookies. I think he is still recovering from all the treats.
We spent Christmas night at out friend's house. Dave and Kari were wonderful hosts, plus I got to bring turkey and stuffing which made up for not having any at Thanksgiving. Now, I'm getting ready to go to Sydney, Australia for work. I'm going a few days early to spend New Year's Eve there. I'll miss Mike but it is a once in a lifetime trip given the distance and expense. I can't wait to get some sun. Hopefully, I won't get too sun burned. :) November 30 Mike was attacked my a squirrelOver dinner tonight my husband told me that he was attacked my a squirrel today. Apparently, a squirrel made its way into the Genetics building on UW campus. He and a couple of other guys working in the labs there decided they would herd the squirrel outside. So, Mike and another guys flanked the squirrel and sho'ed it toward the door while the third guy held open the door. Unfortunately the squirrel didn't particularly want to go outside especially since it meant passing by the guy holding the door. My husband, being the brave man he is, decides to encourage the squirrel by closing the gap between the two and waving his hands around. Instead of fleeing, the squirrel decided to fight. It jumped up on husband's leg and held on for dear life. I'm not sure what his plan was as he didn't bite Mike or anything. Mike of course flipped out and started wildly shaking his leg until the squirrel let go and ran off down the hallway.
Man I wish someone had a camera! November 28 Indoor soccer teamMike and I are on a co-ed indoor soccer team that plays Monday nights. This season we moved to Monday nights from Saturday nights because our team kept complaining about missing "date night". Anyway, we discoved upon moving to Monday night that every former college/high scool soccer player who nows lives in the Seattle area plays on Monday nights. The other teams are totally killing us. Our team members are no slouches but the majority of us are over 30 and never played in school. Last week for example, we lost 18 to 0. OUCH!!! That one really hurt. What annoyed me the most is that the team we played never slowed down. Even though they are totally killing us they kept pushing all their guys forward and slamming the ball down our throats. Believe it or not but I have actually played on teams where we were by far the better team and at some points our good guys moved back to defense and gave the girls the opportunity to play up front and take the corner kicks. It really pisses me off that some people take the game so seriously that they will humiliate another team just to get their rocks off. Hopefully today we'll score some points. I think next season it is back to playing on Saturday night. November 26 Thanksgiving at DisneyMike and I spent Thanksgiving in Orlando with my family this year. It was fun but not really want I was hoping for.

October 30 Halloween party photos are postedParty was fun. Only one casualty and it wasn't me this time. :) October 10 Little Sam has arrived!I can breath now. Mom just called again and said that Samuel Thomas Wright was born at 11:45 CT. He was 8 pounds and 15 ounces (that's a big baby). Michelle and the baby are doing well. Michelle is in recovery now. I'm off to call my dad who will be very pleased that they used his name for Sam's middle name. I'll post a pic when they send me one. Today should be little Sam's birthdayMy sister went into the hospital this morning so they can induce labor. I have been on pins and needles since I woke up this morning. I got a call from my mom driving into work. She tells me that the doctor decided to give Michelle a c-section instead. Apparently, they noticed that the baby had an irregular heartbeat and were concerned. So, now I'm nervous. I know women have c-sections all the time and everything should be ok but she's my sister and I'm worried.I guess I'll just sit here at work and keep my fingers crossed. October 09 Movie night with MikeLast night Mike and I went out for dinner and a movie. This is a pretty typical date night for us but we haven't been able to get out much with Sigmund's bad back keeping us close to home. We decided to go see A History of Violence downtown despite a bad review from a girl in Mike's lab. We can never find a decent, quick, and not too fancy meal downtown so we resign ourselves to eat somewhere in Pacific Place. Johnny Rockets ended up being the only place without a 45 minute wait so we ate burgers and milk shakes which honestly hit the spot pretty well. That really was the last highlight of the evening. The movie absolutely sucked! I don't mean in a shitty action movie kind of sucking. I actually am fond of shitty action movies. This one sucked because the sex and the violence were way too graphic and the acting was incredibly flat. This was actually the exact description we ignored from the girl from Mike's lab. :( The opening sex scene started typically enough. Good looking wife wants to mix it up so she puts on a cheerleader outfit. Then it quickly escalates into an awkward 69 which made everyone in the theater squirm in their seats. The fight scenes were way bloodier than they needed to be. I left the movie rather pissed off. The storyline was actually interesting but everything else about the SUCKED! I beg you; don't go see this movie. September 30 Going back to work on MondayOn Monday, I have to head back to work after 4 weeks of vacation. It has been a great vacation but I do miss work. I'm very lucky that I love what I do and the product I work on. I haven't missed the stress but I have really missed the people. It was pretty cool spending more time with Mike and Sig but with Mike back in school I haven't seen him much during the day anyway. So, I guess it's time to go back to work and be a grown up again. September 29 Poor Sigmund :(My dalmation, Sigmund has had spinal problems for about 7 years now. About 5 years ago he had an MRI and we learned that he had a bulging disc in his lower back and a couple degenerative discs in his neck. At that time no vets had MRI equipment so we had to take him to a people hospital after hours to get the MRI done. Sigmund had surgery on his lower back. They removed something, I can't remember what, and he recovered nicely. We have treated the occassional neck flair ups with anti-inflamatory steroids whch by the way make his drink tons of water and have to pee every hour.
Yesterday we took him to get a second MRI. He has been having some problems lately and the steroids weren't helping at all. We started noticing the problem when Sig refused to go up the back steps from the backyard into the house. This posed a problem as it meant we had to let him out to do his business and then when he was finished, walk him around to the front of the house to let him in. When your dog is peeing every hour or so this can get annoying. On top of that he was obviously reluctant to jump up on the furniture to hang out with us. Any who has been to my house knows that Sigmund loves cuddling up to people on the couch. Poor little guy. Now he just looks at me from the floor and whines. ANyway, we talked to the doctor last night when we picked Sigmund up after his MRI. This time the vet actually had all the equipment on site. The doctor said that he has a bulging disc in his lower back where he had the surgery, he has a couple other minor bulging discs in his back, and the discs in his neck have degenerated more. But, she didn't recommend doing additional surgery his he is only in pain when he jumps up on things and that shouldn't reduce his quality of life too much. She obviously doesn't know my dog.
So now we have to figure out if we can make the house Sig friendly (i.e. master badroom on the lower floor, fence the front yard, lower furniture) or if we should move to a better house. Both options suck given that we just did a bunch of remodelling. I know some of you may think that this is overracting since Sigmund is "just" a dog but he is very important to Mike and me and his quality of life matter alot to us.
How could you not love that face? September 23 Thanks MSN Spaces...for automatically increasing my age by a year today. It would have been nice to at least pretend that I'm not getting older. I still want presents though. :) Mom is making me fried chicken, mashed potatoes, baked, beans, and biscuits for my birthday dinner tonight. I can't wait! I even get apple pie and ice cream for dessert. Yummy!
Speaking of feeling old; yesterday I made my sister, Michelle take me to our old high school's homecoming football game. I haven't seen a high school football game, well since I graduated high school. Let me tell you, it is not that good. And I love football. We were really there to see the halftime show anyway. As most of my friends will attest, I am a huge band geek. I loved being in marching band. We had a huge band, somewhere on the order of 250 kids and we were awesome. We learned from one of the parents in the stands that the band is now half the size and fairly unimpressive. But we didn't even get to judge for ourselves because it was homecoming so for halftime we got to listen to all the accomplishments and the overachieving Homecoming Queen and her court. YAWN! Oh well, we still had fun. Michelle had a little less fun since she is about 2 weeks away from having her second baby and Alex her first child, now 5, was squirmming all over the stands. She was a big sport though. Thanks Michelle! Today, I'm going with her to her doctor's appointment so I can check out the sonogram. I've never seen one before so this should be interesting. September 22 Day 9: Distributing clothing and suppliesI spent time yesterday at a distribution center in Destin, FL for hurricane survivors. It was a mostly depressing experience with a few moments that were heart warming. I’m heading back there this afternoon. My job yesterday was keeping the toiletries area stocked and tidy. What that really meant was policing people to make sure they only took one toothbrush, lotion, or deodorant. It was truly depressing to see people grabbing all they could and shoving it into their packed shopping carts. I tried asking them to limit their items to one per family but then they would say they are shopping for seven families and couldn’t live without seven tubes of toothpaste and seven bottles of lotion. The whole experience was just a reminder that there are ugly people everywhere who will take advantage of every situation. There were some very kind hearted and humbled people who came through as well. A couple different women and teenage girls who came through would ask meekly before taking anything and would say “thank you” every time. These are the people I would stop and talk to about what they had been through. Their stories of loss and courage touched my heart and made the work worthwhile. I met several people from Louisiana and Mississippi who had lost everything and were traveling from one relative to the next once they felt they had worn out their welcome. I was amazed to see that most of the volunteers at the center were evacuees themselves and had also lost all of their possessions. It was a very depressing day. September 19 I almost forgot to mention...The people I went with on the trip to Louisiana were totally fantastic. I spent most of the time traveling there and back with Steve, Chad, and Cindy. All three were funny, kind, and hard workers. Chad was a former Ranger who flew in Black Hawk helicopters. His stories and jokes kept me amused on our long trip. He also took on the dirty task of cleaning up after all the food was cooked. Steve is a kitchen and bathroom designer who is also rather techno savvy. He talked alot about his son CJ who was also on the trip. I was totally impressed by CJ. He is a 15 year old kid who I'm sure plenty of better things to do than hang out with us and get dirty and sweaty but I never heard him complain. Quite the opposite in fact. He obviously wanted to be there to help as many people as possible. He even convinced his dad to rescue a puppy they found on our second day in Louisiana. I think Cindy works for a large food supplier but I don't remember exactly what she does. She was the mom of the trip and the fastest food server I have ever seen. I didn't spend as much time with Cesar or his sister Natalie but they were always laughing. Natalie thought it was hysterical when I accidentally dumped a huge can of chili in the trash instead of into the cooker. There was also a guy named Jimmy with us. He was pretty quite around me so I didn't get to know him very well. I thought they were teasing him when they called him Jimmy Stewart but it turned out that that was actually his name. Go figure. Our fearless leader on the trip was named Chris. He was always talking to people from the churches and those who came by for food. I have never been as comfortable with complete stranger as he obviously was. He just came up to people and smiled, chatted them up, and generally made them feel better in the face of a pretty terrible situation.
I was very worried that they would figure out that I don't go to church and wouldn't want me on the trip so I didn't bring it up. There was some praying at meals and before bed, a lot of bless you's, one church service, and more Christian rock (and rap) than one person should be forced to listen to but I still loved every minute of it. They said that Baptists generally do a lot of charity work especially during disasters and tragedies and I could tell that was true after spending time with this group. Steve and CJ invited me to attend their church service on Sunday when we got back to FWB around midnight on Saturday. That was when I told them that I don't go to church. I think they were surprised but they never made me feel bad. They did try to convince me to come anyway. I think it is their mission to save as many people as possible and I appreciated the effort but I am happy just the way I am. :) Day 6: Hanging out with my familyToday, I took it easy and just hung out with my mom, sister, and nephew. We went to IHOP in the morning, shopping at the outlet mall in the afternoon, and dinner and bowling at night. I crashed around 10:00, still pretty tried from my weekend adventure. Day 5: Another day of hard workI woke up at 5:30 am again. There was a team of tree cutters getting ready to head out to work. What I noticed when we drove into town was that there wasn’t a lot of water damage here from Katrina but that there were trees down all over. Most yards had at least one tree down but several had trees come down on top of or into their homes. The guys who came to help cut the trees down said they were keeping very busy. When they arrived 2 weeks after the hurricane, many people were living in their home despite the fact that there were now trees in their homes and big openings in their roofs. Power was restored to most homes a couple days before we got there but there were few places to buys food. The fast food restaurants were keeping very busy. We split into two groups to pick up breakfast in the morning. One went to Hardees and the other went to a doughnut shop. I was with the group that went for doughnuts. Surprisingly, we found a cop eating breakfast there. We chatted with him for a little while. He said he saw us the day before handing out food at the church. I remembered trying to wave down a few cops the day before to try to give them some BBQ but none stopped. He told us that they don’t stop in that part of town unless they have to. That didn’t sound good. We told him that we were headed back there to hand out hot food again today and he gave us a concerned look. He said that he wouldn’t stay there. He also mentioned that he believed that several people who got food from us probably took it back to other people and sold it, he had seen it before with bottled water. We told him that we did get nervous yesterday when people started eyeing our generator. He said he was glad we packed up everything before taking off the night before because it would be gone if we left it there over night. He almost laughed out loud when we told him that we had planned to spend the night there in tents. He advised us to not set up there again especially since the alcohol ban had been lifted that day and there were bars very close to our location the day before. We decided it was a good idea to take his advice and find a new location. As luck would have it, we found another Baptist church that was willing to let us set up in their parking lot. This one was much better lit and in a slightly nicer part of town. Today, we cooked chilli-mac. For those of you like me who have never had chili-mac, it consists of canned chili mixed in with macaroni noodles. It was really quite tasty but let me tell you it was incredibly messy to prepare. I was covered in chili by later morning. I think we served around 1000 plates of chili-mac on top of the 800 BBQ sandwiches the day before. Not bad. Between unpacking and repacking the trailers and unloading hundreds of cans of soup and chili for the church, I really worked up a sweat. Hopefully, all the work will help me keep off the extra weight from all the southern (aka fried) food I’ve been eating since I got here. We left town about 5:30 or 6:00. It took us about 6 or so hours to make it back to Fort Walton Beach. I have never been happier to see a shower and bed in my life. I talked to Mike on the phone for all of 5 minutes before falling dead asleep. Days 4: Trip to Bogalusa, LAI got up at 5:30 in the morning to meet the Salvation Ministries group at 6:30. We met at a church near where I grew up. There ended up being 9 of us going on the trip to Louisiana. Me, Chris, Steve, Steve's 15 year old son CJ, Chad, Cesar and his younger sister Natalie, Cindy, and Jimmy. We split up into 2 trucks, both towing trailers behind packed with food and supplies. It took us about 7 hours to get to Bogalusa, Louisiana. One side of a bridge we went over was completely washed out so traffic got pretty backed up for a while.
We got to Bogalusa around noon but didn't have a set place to set up so we stopped by a few different churches. We found out that the Red Cross had finally made it there so there wasn't as much need as we had thought. But we got pointed to a small church, Mount Zion Baptist Church, in a very poor part of town. When we drove by the church and I decided that "poor neighborhood" was the biggest understatement I have ever heard. The houses were tiny and thoroughly run down. I don't think Katrina did too much damage to this neighborhood but they certainly needed our help so we stopped there and setup across the street from the church in an empty lot.
It took us a while to set up. We had to unpack the trailers and setup tents, tables, and all the food. For the first meal, we served the most amazing BBQ pork butt I have ever tasted. We made pulled pork BBQ sandwiches and let me tell you, everyone who ate one loved it and came back for more. Around mid day, an older gentleman came by and told us that he was the city councilman for the area we were in. He kindly thanked us for coming and serving food and assured us that the people of this neighborhood really needed our help. He then asked us if we knew where we were. We stared at him with blank looks on our faces until he said, "You're in the middle of the hood." He went on to say that this is the poorest neighbor in the poorest parish of all of Louisiana. He left us with a very uncomfortable feeling that was multiplied when dusk started coming. The people in the church locked up and headed out around 4:30. By 5:00 we decided that it would not be safe to stay the night there in tents. In record time we packed the trailers and trucks and made a hasty departure. Luckily, we found out where the Red Cross we set up and were invited to stay the night with them in the gym of another local Baptist church.
Curfew was at 9:00 so by 8:00 almost every restaurant was closed for the night. Even though the BBQ pork was amazing, none us us could take having it for dinner after preparing and serving it all day. Luckily, we found a Chinese restaurant still open and we ate there. Sleep was pretty tough in the gym with so many people around. I had my iPod so I fell asleep listening to music. |
