Nikki SantoroMy deep thoughts and mindless ramblings

February 01 SurgeryHad surgery on my shoulder on Monday. According to my doctor it was supposed to be a cake walk. Not so much. I had a pump full of medicine plugged into my arm until Mike pulled it out tonight. I took off all the bandages as well. So, now all that I have left are three small stiches and a sling around my left arm. Typing with one hand is challenging. The other funny thing I noticed was that I couldn't remember my password unless I used both hands to type. Very strange.Any way, I'm recovering and will hopefully be back to normal soon. No soccer for a little while though. :( January 22 A very yuppie dayYou know you're a yuppie when your very busy Saturday looks like the following...
10 AM - Pilaties with your husband
Noon - MRI on bad shoulder
2 PM - Take dog to physical therapy (rehab on bad back)
4 PM - Massage
9 PM - Indoor soccer (over 30 league)
January 15 The return of indoor soccerMike and I played soccer Friday night (in the rain) for our old outdoor team and indoor soccer Saturday night. We moved from Monday night to Saturday because we kept getting killed by the more experienced and younger players. We lost a few players in the move (SeanPur = too cool for school) so we had to do some recruiting. Thankfully CarmenZ and Nilaldri joined up. Carmen was amazing. Her baby Tyler is only 9 weeks old and yet she was running around the field like crazy. She scored the team's highest number of points (3) and was a wall on defense. We won the game 8-1. I scored 2 goals thanks to Carmen's brilliant passing. I even had a couple of assists. I love Saturdays! :) January 08 Australia TripWhat can I say about my trip to Australia? It was amazing! My hosts Julian, Dave, and Daniel were incredibly generous with their time and my travel mate Dietmar was a great sport and a lot of fun. We worked hard (really, I swear) and packed as much sight-seeing in as possible. I arrived on the 30th of December and left January 7th. It is hard to believe how much I saw while there. Here is a summary: Dec 30th: plane ride to Australia, Heath Ledger sits one row in front of me, arrive in Sydney, take a nap, go shopping Dec 31: tour around Darling Harbor, visit the Chinese Garden, first look at Bondi beach, fantastic BBQ on Julian's deck overlooking the beach, fireworks, and a little Texas Holdem poker, we really did talk about work (I promise) Jan 1 (the hottest day on record in Australia): ferry ride to Manly, lunch overlooking Manly, quick dip in the water, 15 min walk from Manly beach to Shelly beach, ferry ride back to Sydney, recover from heatstroke in hotel Jan 2: head out West to the Blue Mountains, survive Dietmar's driving, stop at Featherdale Wildlife Park, pet some koalas, feed a kangaroo, make our way out make our way out to see the Three Sisters rock formation, hike down and then back up the 841 step Giant Staircase, sweat a lot Jan 3: meet 3H group at their offices in Bondi Junction, dinner at Mu Shu (very yummy) and drinks at Icebergs overlooking Bondi beach, drank a couple Scarpinas my new very favorite drink (it's like a lemon sorbet that will kick your ass) Jan 4: Dietmar and the boys go play golf, I walked around the Botanical Gardens taking lots of pictures of the enormous bats for Dietmar, 3 and a half hour climb to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Jan 5: more meetings with 3H, checkout the incredible view from Daniel's penthouse apartment in Bondi Junction, a couple more Scarpinas, trip to Star City Casino for a little blackjack, taught the boys to play craps, win a respectable amount of Australian dollars Jan 6: Julian and Dave promise to teach me to surf, we visit Whale Beach and Palm Beach (both beautiful), I pick out my new house overlooking Whale Beach, beaches are closed to swimming and surfing because the wind it too choppy, head back to the city to catch the afternoon session of cricket, Dave explains the basic rules of cricket, Julian taunts the opposing team, Australian captain, Ricky Ponting scores over 100 points to lead Australia to victory Jan 7: plane ride back home December 26 Great Christmas this year!Mike and I spent Christmas in Seattle this year. We had a great time. We went to Ho Ho's Chinese restaurant again this year for Christmas Eve. It has become our tradition. The food is so great; I don't know why we only go there once a year.
I loved buying a bunch of presents for Mike and my family. We totally over buy for each other. Probably because we don't have any kids and get a kick out of surprising each other. I got a bunch of CDs and DVDs for Christmas. Mike also gave me a speed bag to go along with my heavy bag down in the basement. I can't wait to get it set up so I can try it out. I am pretty terrible on the speed bag so I could use the practice. Mike also found me a great FSU sweatshirt so I could officially retire the one I bought when I was still in college. Mike got a video iPod and I have to admit the color interface really makes a difference. I haven't watched any videos on it yet though. Our dog Sigmund loved opening his presents. I wrapped up a few regular sized and one extra large tennis ball for him along with some cookies. I think he is still recovering from all the treats.
We spent Christmas night at out friend's house. Dave and Kari were wonderful hosts, plus I got to bring turkey and stuffing which made up for not having any at Thanksgiving. Now, I'm getting ready to go to Sydney, Australia for work. I'm going a few days early to spend New Year's Eve there. I'll miss Mike but it is a once in a lifetime trip given the distance and expense. I can't wait to get some sun. Hopefully, I won't get too sun burned. :) November 30 Mike was attacked my a squirrelOver dinner tonight my husband told me that he was attacked my a squirrel today. Apparently, a squirrel made its way into the Genetics building on UW campus. He and a couple of other guys working in the labs there decided they would herd the squirrel outside. So, Mike and another guys flanked the squirrel and sho'ed it toward the door while the third guy held open the door. Unfortunately the squirrel didn't particularly want to go outside especially since it meant passing by the guy holding the door. My husband, being the brave man he is, decides to encourage the squirrel by closing the gap between the two and waving his hands around. Instead of fleeing, the squirrel decided to fight. It jumped up on husband's leg and held on for dear life. I'm not sure what his plan was as he didn't bite Mike or anything. Mike of course flipped out and started wildly shaking his leg until the squirrel let go and ran off down the hallway.
Man I wish someone had a camera! November 28 Indoor soccer teamMike and I are on a co-ed indoor soccer team that plays Monday nights. This season we moved to Monday nights from Saturday nights because our team kept complaining about missing "date night". Anyway, we discoved upon moving to Monday night that every former college/high scool soccer player who nows lives in the Seattle area plays on Monday nights. The other teams are totally killing us. Our team members are no slouches but the majority of us are over 30 and never played in school. Last week for example, we lost 18 to 0. OUCH!!! That one really hurt. What annoyed me the most is that the team we played never slowed down. Even though they are totally killing us they kept pushing all their guys forward and slamming the ball down our throats. Believe it or not but I have actually played on teams where we were by far the better team and at some points our good guys moved back to defense and gave the girls the opportunity to play up front and take the corner kicks. It really pisses me off that some people take the game so seriously that they will humiliate another team just to get their rocks off. Hopefully today we'll score some points. I think next season it is back to playing on Saturday night. |
